Hi

Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo
Internet Explorer 7
Windows Live version 12.0.1606

I have been unable to send emails when using Windows Live now for the last
week. I can receive emails no problem. I have it connected to a virgin
media account and have had no problems at all so far.

Error Message reads:

An unknown error has occurred.

Subject 'test'
Server Error: 421
Server Response: 421 aamtaout01-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from
[90.193.236.84]
Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC67
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Cheers
Dave

That IP address (90.193.236.84) in the error message belongs to Sky.com
Since you are connected to Sky, it appears that NTL/Virgin won't let you use
their email server.
IF NTL has an authenticated email server, use that, if not, use Sky's email
SMTP server.

Thanks very much. I am staying with parents who have sky broadband wireless,
whilst I have Virgin broadband at home.

I am able to send emails direct from virgin website though, just not through
windows live.

Never mind though, cheers for your help.

Have a good new year!

You probably haven't realized that, when you're sending mail, you
have a direct connection to the ISP's SMTP server. Nowadays, ISPs
only allow their *own* customers to use their SMTP servers (as a
spam avoidance exercise). In other words, if you're connected via
Sky, you have to use the Sky server. It will reject any attempt to
connect to another ISP's server, like smtp.ntlworld.com, and
ntlworld will reject any attempt to connect to their server by a Sky
customer.
Just have a look at the outgoing server settings on Dad's account
and use those. You might have to ask him first, especially if Sky
expect authentication just to prove that you are indeed a Sky
customer - in which case you'll need his password. If you set up a
new account (called Parents or something) just for this, it's a
simple matter to use that next time you visit them.

Happy New Year!

Using web mail is different than using client email. On this side of the
Atlantic, some ISPs (AT&T, Comcast, and, more recently, Cox) make a
provision for their traveling customer by allowing authenticated SMTP access
through a designated message submission port. Others are more strict; and
their uses can't connect unless on their IP network.

You could check with Virgin, and see if they have set up authenticated SMTP
message submission access to their servers. And suggest that they allow it,
if they don't.

You will notice that Dax gave some vital information.
Can you use Webmail to send email?
Is this a pop account?

sorry about earlier pressed wrong button

actually think sky server did require secure check box ticked until just
this weekend
they seemd to suddenly have changed it to not requiring anymore

this have been the problem which presumably is now not a problem as from
last weekend - have had to untick my box
